How to calculate your working hours?

Calculating working hours is an essential step for any employee, employer or HR manager. Whether you are on a permanent, temporary or freelance contract, knowing exactly how many hours you have worked allows you to verify your payslip, calculate overtime and comply with labor regulations.

Understanding legal working time

The legal working time varies by country and contract. Beyond the standard weekly threshold, overtime hours qualify for a salary premium. Our tool lets you configure the base hours and automatically calculates overtime at the applicable rates.

Centesimal calculation (1/100th of an hour)

The centesimal system is used in payroll to simplify calculations. Instead of expressing time in hours:minutes (e.g. 7h30), it is converted to hundredths of an hour (7.50). This method simplifies salary calculations as it allows direct multiplication by the hourly rate.

Quick conversion table: 15 min = 0.25 | 30 min = 0.50 | 45 min = 0.75 | 10 min ≈ 0.17 | 20 min ≈ 0.33 | 40 min ≈ 0.67

Break management and effective working time

Effective working time is the period during which the employee is at the employer's disposal. Breaks are generally not counted. The law requires a minimum of 20 minutes of break after 6 consecutive hours of work. Our tool automatically deducts breaks from the total time.

Night work and shifted schedules

Our calculator handles schedules crossing midnight (e.g. 10:00 PM → 6:00 AM). It automatically detects that the end time is the next day and correctly calculates a duration of 8 hours. A visual 🌙 indicator marks night shifts.
