How to calculate working time?

Calculating working time is a daily operation for millions of employees and employers. Whether you clock your hours manually or verify a payslip, it is essential to know how to precisely calculate the duration between two times.

Simple calculation: end time - start time

The basic formula is: Working time = End time - Start time - Break. For example, if you start at 8:30 AM and finish at 5:00 PM with a 1-hour break, your effective working time is 7h30 (or 7.50 in centesimal).

Adding multiple time slots

If you work split shifts (morning + afternoon, or multiple assignments in a day), you can add as many time slots as needed. The calculator automatically sums all durations to give you the total for the day.

Centesimal result for payroll

The result is displayed in both hours:minutes and centesimal format (1/100th of an hour). The centesimal format is the one used by payroll software and HR departments. This facilitates salary calculation by directly multiplying by the hourly rate.
